Celtic and Norse Shamanic Styles: A Lifelong Journey

In our modern world, where knowledge is often measured by degrees and certifications, the paths of Celtic and Norse shamanism—embodied in practices like Druidry and Vitki—remind us that true mastery cannot be quantified or expedited. These ancient traditions are rooted in deep, personal connection with the natural world and the spiritual realms, and they demand a lifelong commitment that goes beyond any formal training or certification.
The Path of Druidry
My journey into Celtic shamanism began with Druidry, a spiritual path that reveres the natural world and seeks wisdom through connection with the earth, the elements, and the cycles of nature. Druidry teaches us that the land itself is sacred, that every tree, stone, and stream has its own spirit and story. This path has guided me to develop a profound relationship with the earth, to listen to what the wind, the trees, and the ancient wisdom of the land has to say.
Druidry is not a path that can be mastered through a course or a certificate. It is a living tradition, passed down through generations, evolving with each practitioner who dedicates themselves to its teachings. My training in Druidry has been a continuous journey of learning, unlearning, and relearning—a process that deepens with every season, every ritual, and every moment spent in communion with the natural world.
The Vitki Tradition
On the Norse side, my exploration of shamanic practices led me to the path of the Vitki. In Norse tradition, a Vitki is a practitioner of magic, divination, and shamanic wisdom, deeply connected to the runes, the gods, and the spirit world. Like Druidry, the Vitki tradition is not something that can be fully learned from books or classes. It requires direct experience, personal gnosis, and a lifelong dedication to understanding the mysteries of the cosmos.
The Vitki path has taught me the power of the runes as both symbols and living energies, each with its own spirit and meaning. Working with the runes is NOT merely an intellectual exercise but a deeply intuitive process that involves building a relationship with these ancient symbols, understanding their nuances, and allowing them to guide my spiritual practice. The Vitki path has also deepened my connection to the Norse gods and the natural forces they embody, reminding me that true wisdom comes from direct experience and ongoing engagement with the divine.
Embracing the Difficulties of Everyday Life
While the paths of Druidry and Vitki are filled with moments of profound insight and connection, it's important to acknowledge that not every day is filled with light and clarity. Life, even for seasoned practitioners, is not always unicorns and rainbows. There are days when it feels like everything is falling apart, when the weight of the world is overwhelming, and when the spiritual path seems distant and unreachable.
These lows are not only normal but are an integral part of the journey. In fact, some of the most skilled Druids and Vitki's have gained their wisdom and resilience through first-hand experience of these challenges. It is through facing these dark times—when everything feels like garbage—that the true strength of a practitioner is forged. These experiences teach us that the spiritual path is not about avoiding difficulties but about learning to navigate them with grace and resolve.
I have faced these challenges myself, and I can attest that it is not easy. There have been times when I felt submerged, drowning under the weight of life's struggles. But through a series of events, inner work, and a relentless resolve, I found myself rising back to the surface, regaining my footing, and eventually hearing a calling to help others heal. It is often in the depths of our struggles that we discover our greatest strengths and our true purpose.
The journey of a druid or Vitki is one of resilience, not just in spiritual matters but in the face of everyday life. It's about understanding that the lows are just as important as the highs and that every challenge is an opportunity for growth. These experiences shape us into better healers, teachers, and guides, enabling us to support others on their paths with empathy and wisdom.
A Lifelong Commitment
Both Druidry and the Vitki tradition emphasize that the path of spiritual growth is never complete. There is no final destination, no ultimate mastery to be achieved. Instead, these paths are about continuous learning, deepening our understanding, and expanding our connection to the spiritual and natural worlds.
In my experience, the most valuable lessons have not come from courses or certifications but from the personal experiences, the challenges, and the revelations that occur when I engage directly with these ancient traditions. Every ritual, every meditation, every encounter with the spirit world adds another layer to my understanding and practice. This is why I believe that the true essence of Druidry and Vitki cannot be captured in a certificate or a title. They are living, breathing traditions that grow and evolve with us as we walk our spiritual paths.
Embracing the Journey
For those drawn to the Celtic and Norse shamanic traditions, I encourage you to embrace the journey with an open heart and a willingness to learn from the world around you. Seek out teachers and mentors, but also trust in your own experiences and insights. Remember that the path is not about achieving a specific status or recognition but about deepening your connection with the natural and spiritual realms.
The journey of a druid or a Vitki is one of lifelong learning, where every step brings new insights, challenges, and opportunities for growth. It is a path that requires patience, dedication, and humility, but it also offers profound rewards for those who are willing to walk it with sincerity and commitment.
In the end, the true measure of your progress is not found in certificates or titles but in the wisdom you gain, the relationships you build with the natural world and the spirit realms, and the personal transformation that occurs as you walk the path. The journey itself is the destination, and the learning never ends.
And remember, even when things are horrible, always have a joke at the ready. You absolutely need to be able to laugh or find some sort of light-hearted something about the situation. I've been in some tough spots myself—like that time in Afghanistan when we were under attack, and I found myself in the bathroom. All I could do was shake my head, smirk at the ridiculousness of the situation, (QUICKLY) finish up my business, and seek safety. You pick the situation, and I guarantee I've made a joke. Not everyone has appreciated the humor, but it's always helped me deal with whatever life threw at me.
